Creatine helps the body produce fuel, ATP. During exercise ATP stores are depleted rapidly and creatine accelerates the rate at which ATP is replaced. Creatine does make the body "retain water", but the key here is where. The majority of water is stored inside the muscle cell. However, this "cell-hydration" is actually beneficial. Hydrated cells have higher rates of protein synthesis and repair quicker.
